Make Your Remote Workspace Work For You: How to Work From Anywhere

January 15, 2025

What your work environment can do for you to make working from anywhere the most productive it can be.

Working from home, or working from anywhere, can be distracting for some—especially those who haven’t gotten used to it or fallen into a rhythm with it yet. Here are a few things to consider about where you work when you’re working remotely.

Pick somewhere with electrical outlets within reach. And compounded with that—don’t forget your charger. Possibly one of the more annoying things in the world is having to go home when you’re in the groove of working just because your laptop is about to die on you.

Bring your headphones. If you're someone who is comfortable taking meetings in public spaces, then this is obvious and mandatory, but even if you’re not expecting a call while you’re out, headphones are still key. Even if you don’t always want to listen to music or podcasts while you work, you’re still at the mercy of whatever playlist is on in the space. If something that feels distracting to you comes on, you want to be prepared to have other options.

Consider noise. If you want to get out of your apartment for the day but can’t work in loud or slightly chaotic environments, you should probably check out the vibe of the coffee shop or bar before you go to set up for the day. These are public places, so there will almost always be other people in there, talking and interacting. It just comes down to how many other people there usually are, and how many of them are also working versus socializing.

Plan for coffee, lunch, etc. Wherever you’re headed probably serves coffee… but if you’re going to a more non-traditional place (like a bar or brewery) to do some work and you need to be caffeinated, you may want to check ahead of time. Also, if you’re planning on being somewhere for the majority of the day, you might want to know food is an option.

Here’s a very obvious one: wifi. Don’t think I need to elaborate on that.
